I HATE the Cashew

Description:

Errm... the name's the program.

I don't like the cashew (the nasty icon in the right top corner of your plasma desktop that won't go away, even if plasma's locked)
It seems to have hardly any function, especially as i'm not interested in plasma's activities.
(Maybe good for promotion, but i already have KDE4 and plasma - don't need no spam anymore ;-)

Well, i thought:
"There certainly soon will be an option to get rid of it. Hey this is KDE! Not GNOME or Mac OS or - huahhah - windows ;-)"

It didn't.
So i googled around. (maybe there was an undocumented and yet not GUI'd option i could simply hack into a config file)

What i figured out literally /shocked/ me (and i wasn't scared by "The Ring" or so... though it was a cool movie. Too much splatter on the end... i'm drifting)

following links were the first on the list i clicked for interest:

http://forums.opensuse.org/soapbox/387720-kde-doesnt-need-certain-users-3.html

Now, i haven't talked to Aaron since ages.
--== I do NOT know how much of this is true! ==--
Just in case any is, here's my opinion.

"It's impossible to remove this for code reasons" - WRONG!
I can do it from another plasmoid. I also scanned the plasma code to do this and can assure you: adding an option to not show this thing and toggle that from a context dialog is a zero-brainer. I can make a patch if the plasma devs really can't... ;-P

"Users should not be confronted with options"
The f***** hide them, but still HAVE them. Believing one could create something absolute that will perfectly fit everybody means, one imperatively needs a psychiatrist - sorry.
I find such statement inacceptable and it's really hard to believe Aaron stated this.

PLEASE: Anyone find a proof or get a counterstatement and inform me. Thanks.

However. As there really seems to be a war on this thing: here's ;-)

The plasmoid was written within 15 minutes of anger (cause that's sth. one can easily trigger in me) so sorry for the slightly offensive name. Wrath is gone. I'm calm. Maybe i'll rename updates - iff we need them =D

Installation:
-> you'll probably need KDE 4.1 and up!

tar -xjf iHateTheCashew.tbz
cd iHateTheCashew
mkdir build
cd build
ccmake ..
[setup configuration, adjust INSTALL_PREFIX, maybe check ENABLE_FINAL...]
make && sudo make install

Usage:
Add the plasmoid to the desktop - cashew's gone.
(You cannot add it more than once, but i don't know if plasma notices that adding failed - i.e. it may present 2 or more instances in the applet browser)
Remove the plasmoid - chashew reappears.

So much for now.

Changelog:

0.2: KDE 4.2 plasma cmake compatibility
0.2a: really make cmake KDE 4.2 + plasma compatible - sorry everyone
0.2b: now with 4.2 RC1 support...
0.2c: and fixd license test, there's no real reason to update from b) to c)
0.3: should be able to remove the cashew on several activities (but "must" be added to each)
0.4: support KDE 4.4

 patch it out

 by aapgorilla on: Jan 15 2010

Thomas, could you make a patch to make the cashew optional (rather than disabling it through another plasmoid) because still the kde devs maintain stubborn in keeping this ugly useless thing on the desktop.

My hope is a patch to make the cashew optional will make its way into various distros and eventually upstream...

iirc SuSE keeps such patch (or has it been dropped?) and unless some i get emails from "official" kde4/plasma maintainers of relevant distros, i'm not gonna waste time on maintaining a patch for the selfcompilers (what's more work, as you _have_ to align it with every minor release or even svn changes... so this here is more flexible, and hardly costs you an thing)

I'll test the "reappearing" cassue issue and fix it somewhen this WE

 Plasmoid crashes Plasma

 by nickh on: Feb 7 2010

I just compiled and installed this plasmoid. Unfortunately, when I tried to add it as a widget, it crashed Plasma. Here's the crash report:
http://pastie.org/813627

I'm running:
* Ubuntu 9.10
* Qt: 4.5.2
* KDE: 4.3.2 (KDE 4.3.2)
* kde4-config: 1.0

I tried adding the plasmoid/widget again, and this time it worked. Maybe that's because Plasma restarted (due to the crash)?
